Inside the Bloom Botanic Studio: A Morning with Maia

We opened the studio doors at 5AM on a Tuesday — the hour when orders get built, the day's arrangements take shape, and the real work happens before anyone else wakes up.

Our Story

Grown from
the ground
up.

"I started Bloom with a bucket of dahlias from my neighbor's garden and a folding table at the Sacramento farmers market. Fourteen years later, we're still doing exactly that — just at greater scale, and with considerably better knives."

Bloom Botanic was founded in 2012 by Maia Reyes, a self-taught florist who grew up on her family's flower farm in the Sacramento Valley. What began as a market stall became a studio, then a full-service floral design house serving some of California's most beautiful weddings and events.

From the beginning, the philosophy has been simple: flowers should feel like they belong. Not arranged, not placed — grown there. Every piece we create starts with that question: what would nature do?

Today, Bloom works with 32 partner farms across Northern California, sourcing exclusively what's in season and at peak. We don't stock filler. We don't import from South America. If it doesn't grow here, it doesn't go in the arrangement.

Sourcing

California grown,
always.

I.
Partner Farms

We work with 32 farms across the Sacramento Valley, Sierra Foothills, and Northern Coast. Relationships built over a decade mean we get first access to the best of each harvest — the stems no one else sees.

II.
Seasonal Only

Our menu changes with the growing calendar. If it's not in season in California, it's not in our studio. This constraint is our greatest creative asset — it forces us to work with what's extraordinary right now.

III.
Zero Imports

We made the decision in 2018 to stop importing flowers from overseas. It was hard. We lost some clients who wanted South American roses in January. We gained a clarity of vision we wouldn't trade for anything.

Maia Reyes, Founder – Bloom Botanic

Meet the Founder

Maia Reyes

Founder & Lead Designer

Maia grew up on her family's dahlia farm in Woodland, CA, where she spent summers learning which flowers bloomed when and why. She trained in San Francisco before returning to Sacramento to start Bloom at 28.

Her design philosophy draws from Japanese ikebana — the idea that negative space is as important as the flower itself — filtered through a distinctly Californian sensibility. She is obsessed with texture, allergic to symmetry, and has strong opinions about peonies.

When she's not in the studio, she tends a half-acre cutting garden behind her home in Land Park and serves on the board of the California Cut Flower Commission.
